One of Miami Beach’s most beloved cocktail destinations received a major civic honor this month as Sweet Liberty Drinks & Supply Co. was officially recognized by Miami-Dade County with a proclamation declaring June 20 as “Sweet Liberty Day” beginning in 2026.
The proclamation was presented by Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez on June 20 in recognition of the award-winning bar’s lasting contributions to Miami Beach’s hospitality industry, its influence on cocktail culture, and its unwavering commitment to the local community.
Located in the Collins Park neighborhood next to the Bass Museum of Art, Sweet Liberty has become a landmark in Miami Beach nightlife since opening its doors. Founded by the late, award-winning bartender John Lermayer, alongside restaurateur David Martinez and hospitality veteran Dan Binkiewicz, the bar has earned international acclaim with appearances on both The World’s 50 Best Bars and North America’s 50 Best Bars lists.
The recognition also served as a reminder of John Lermayer’s enduring legacy. In 2018, the City of Miami Beach established John Lermayer Day on June 21 to honor the beloved bartender and co-founder, whose vision continues to shape Sweet Liberty’s identity and hospitality philosophy.

The official designation of Sweet Liberty Day recognized not only the bar’s achievements in the beverage industry but also its role in shaping Miami’s vibrant cocktail scene and nightlife culture over the years.
Beyond its award-winning beverage program, Sweet Liberty has built a loyal following with its approachable atmosphere and creative American cuisine. The food menu, curated by James Beard Award-winning chef Michelle Bernstein, features favorites such as the Cauliflower Nachos, Michy’s Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the Buns of Liberty Burger.
Its acclaimed cocktail program, developed by Naren Young, includes signature drinks like the Something Spicy, a tequila-based favorite, the frozen Mango Margarita, and Our Piña Colada, crafted with a house rum blend, pineapple, coconut cream, coffee beans, and Pedro Ximénez sherry.
With its iconic neon motto, “Pursue Happiness,” glowing above the bar, Sweet Liberty continues to be a gathering place for locals, industry professionals, and visitors alike—an institution whose impact on Miami’s hospitality scene has now been officially recognized for generations to come.
