by Helena Jose

Elizabeth Diaz Hernandez is a rising star in the field of bartending in Miami. Currently working as a bartender at La Cumbacha, she has quickly gained recognition for her skills and creativity in crafting unique and delicious cocktails. With her passion for mixology and dedication to her craft, it is no surprise that Elizabeth has already made a name for herself in the industry.

One notable achievement in Elizabeth’s career is her recent victory in the “Spirit of Saint Lucia Cocktail Competition.” This competition showcased the talents of bartenders from across the region, and Elizabeth’s cocktail stood out amongst the rest. Her winning creation not only demonstrated her knowledge of flavors and techniques but also showcased her ability to think outside the box and create innovative drinks.

With her win in the cocktail competition and her growing reputation within Miami’s bartending community, Elizabeth Diaz Hernandez is definitely someone to keep an eye on. Her commitment to excellence, combined with her creativity and passion for mixology, sets her apart from others in the field. As she continues to hone her skills and gain more experience, it is clear that Elizabeth has a bright future ahead as a star bartender in Miami and beyond.

  1. What inspired you to pursue a career in bartending, and how did you become interested in mixology?

I worked as a server at Sushi Sake Miami Lakes two and a half years ago. One day, there was an emergency with the bartender, causing everyone to panic. Since I was always curious about the bar and frequently asked questions about it, I was called to step in. The owner appreciated my proactive approach and gave me an opportunity.

I became interested in mixology after seeing renowned bartenders experimenting with molecular mixology. It inspired me to want to try it myself someday. Watching “Drink Masters” on Netflix further fueled my passion for mixology (although I must admit, I am still a novice in this field).

  1. Have you faced any unique challenges or opportunities in the industry? How have you navigated them?

One of the initial obstacles I encountered was being thrust into the role of a bar manager without having any prior experience as a bar back. Consequently, I faced numerous challenges and had to rely on self-teaching, attending various masterclasses, and learning from anyone willing to impart their knowledge. Throughout this journey, I grappled with self-doubt and questioned whether I possessed the skills necessary to be a competent bartender, let alone a bar manager. However, my determination to learn and earn my title fueled my discipline.

  1. Elizabeth, behind the bar, you radiate confidence and warmth. How do you ensure that every customer feels welcomed and valued?

My objective as a bartender is to prioritize hospitality. While anyone can create exceptional beverages and any establishment can offer delicious food, the challenge lies in reviving the essence of hospitality. I strive to exceed expectations for every customer, going the extra mile by getting things they need or providing almond milk for those with dairy allergies. These gestures make guests feel at home. Additionally, there is an unspoken element that radiates this sense of hospitality. If customers perceive this feeling, then I consider my job well done.

  1. Outside of work, you enjoy exploring your city’s culinary scene. Can you share a memorable food or drink discovery that influenced your mixology approach?

When I think of two places that have left a lasting impression on me, Sweet Liberty and Cafe La Trova immediately come to mind. Sweet Liberty surprised me with their unique drink inspired by a salad. Initially, I was skeptical about the idea of a salad in a drink, but I decided to give it a try. To my delight, it was delicious and opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of culinary creativity. It taught me to think outside of the box and inspired me greatly. However, the most important place for me is Cafe La Trova. The moment I stepped into this establishment, I could feel the vibrant atmosphere. They embody the essence of el Cantinero Cubano with their warm hospitality, professionalism, and the perfect blend of flavors. Being there has shown me exactly where I aspire to be in the future.

  1. What is your favorite pastime?

My favorite past time is to be at home with my cats, enjoying an album from one of my favorite artists and creating art.

  1. Can you share how this artistic flair translates into your cocktail creations? How do you draw inspiration from art forms, visual arts, music, or literature, to craft unique and visually stunning drinks?

It’s amazing how creativity can be sparked by various sources. Whether it’s a song, a memorable quote from a random show, or the people I interact with, anything and everyone can inspire me. When it comes to creating cocktails, I draw a lot of inspiration from food and desserts. As someone who strives for perfection, my main concern is the taste of the cocktail. Once I have that figured out, the visual aspect comes naturally and effortlessly. I don’t overthink it; it just flows.

  1. With the industry constantly evolving, how do you stay informed about the latest trends and innovations in mixology, and how do you incorporate them into your practice?

Before accessing any streaming platforms, my first choice is always YouTube. On YouTube, I subscribe to channels of individuals who inspire me, allowing me to explore various aspects of mixology. I learn from passionate experts who generously share their extensive knowledge of the industry. Additionally, I actively participate in courses such as “The Art of Shaking” by the renowned Simone Caporale, drawing further inspiration from these learning opportunities.

  1. Miami is a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond. How do you celebrate this diversity in your bar atmosphere?

At our bar, we embrace diversity among our staff, which is a constant source of inspiration for me. Additionally, we offer classes led by Loiver Hernandez Crespo and Julio Cabrera, where we learn the art of crafting classic cocktails. This has proven to be immensely beneficial, as it enables us to recreate authentic drinks like the Ti Punch from Martinique. As a result, when we have guests from the island, we can make them feel right at home. Our bar warmly welcomes and celebrates everyone who walks through our doors

  1. Elizabeth, what professional milestones or achievements do you hope to accomplish in your bartending career, and how do you plan to work towards them?

My intention has always been to open my own spot that welcomes local artists and creative individuals. I acknowledge the importance of following a proper process and embracing it. In the interim, I intend to continue  I plan on continuing my journey of learning from the best. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire others in the same way that everyone in my life inspires me. I aspire to inspire people from all walks of life, regardless of their wealth, gender, or identity. Whether they are CEOs or janitors, I want them to look at me and say, “If she won a competition by stepping on two boxes because she couldn’t reach the bar, then I can achieve greatness too.” This is my way of making the world a better place, through the power of positivity.
